Carrollton’s Director Wayne Gay Inducted into the GRPA Hall of Fame

(Jekyll Island, November 8, 2010) – Carrollton’s Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Wayne Gay, received the Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s (GRPA) highest award at their recent annual conference and trade show on Jekyll Island. At the same conference where Gay received his GRPA 45 year service pin, he also joined the 34 other parks and recreation professionals who have been inducted into the GRPA Hall of Fame since 1988.

Wayne started in the field as a part timer in a youth program in Millen, Georgia and a recreation intern at Emanuel County Parks and Recreation Department. He moved through Sylvania, Milledgeville, and Georgia Southern in assistant positions and then as a Director in Dublin, Dothan, Alabama and Carrollton. He is a very proud Georgia Southern alumnus holding BS and Masters Degrees and a certificate from Tulane
University. Obviously, Wayne believes in education and in continuing education. He has been a staunch supporter of GRPA conferences and has encouraged participation of his staff at every level of the organization. He has taught and lectured on the “whys and how to’s” of recreation from the University of Alabama, to the University of South Alabama, to Georgia Southern and everywhere in between.

He has held many positions throughout the years in GRPA including all executive committee positions and President. He currently serves as the Southern Region Chair of the National Recreation and Park Association and has served terms on the NRPA Board of Trustees. Serving on various committees, he has particularly contributed to the public policy and athletic committees. He has been an active member of GRPA since 1966 and was recognized as the GRPA Distinguished Professional of the Year in 1997. Under his direction, Wayne’s departments have been named Department of the Year 3 times and Carrollton achieved and maintains national CAPRA certification.

At Jekyll Island to join in Wayne’s moment were his wife Sybil, his son Tracy, his daughter Skye, and many of his previous and current staff members. Carrollton PRCA Board Chairman and GRPA Board of Trustee member Ann Fletcher delivered Wayne’s induction remarks.
